How to Add a New Device to Your Kindle Account

How to Rename and Remove Kindle Devices on Your Amazon Account

Here's how to clean up the list of Kindle devices on your Amazon account, either through the Amazon website or mobile app.

Amazon keeps track of where and when you installed its apps over the years. If you use Kindle for a long time and on different systems, the list of devices with the app could be extensive.

You can manage it by renaming and removing Kindle devices, either through your Amazon account or the Kindle mobile app. Here's a simple guide on how to do it using both methods.

Why Rename or Remove Kindle Devices?

Leaving the list alone isn't a big deal, but there are good reasons for managing it. Firstly, when you buy an ebook on the Amazon store and try to choose a Kindle device to send it to, having several vaguely named devices is confusing.

Apart from making the process more convenient, you'll avoid mistakenly sending your purchase to an old device you don't have anymore.

In terms of removing a Kindle device from the list, the action has the same benefits, but it's also wise when giving an old phone or tablet to someone else. Then, they can add the device to their own Amazon list and won't get books meant for you.

How to Rename and Remove Your Kindle Devices

You can either rename or remove your Kindle devices through the Amazon website or the mobile app.

Rename and Remove Kindle Devices via the Amazon Website

  1. Go to Amazon and click or hover over your Account & Lists button.
  2. From the dropdown menu, select Content & Devices. It might also be called Manage Your Content and Devices.
  3. A new page will open with various tabs. Go to Devices, where all the Amazon apps you've installed will appear.
  4. Click on the Kindle icon, and it'll bring up a full list of devices you used it on.

To rename a device, select Edit right next to its current title. Just fill in the Device Name field with whatever you want and click Save.

To remove a device from the list, select the Deregister button instead.

Rename and Remove Kindle Devices via the Amazon Mobile App

This method is only for renaming the particular device that contains the app.

  1. Launch the software and tap the More icon.
  2. When the menu opens, select Settings and then Device Name.
  3. Finally, erase the existing name, fill in the new one, and select Rename Device.

The change will be instant. It's a quick and easy solution, another of the Kindle app's free features.

Kindle Device vs. Free App: Learn the Differences and Similarities

This whole process uses Amazon's website and free Kindle app, but the steps work for a proper Kindle device too. Before you invest in the latter, getting to know similarities like this is a good idea, as well as the differences.

Kindle Device vs. Free Kindle App: Which One Should You Use?

Do you really need a Kindle device when you can just use the free Kindle app? Ereaders have their use, but perhaps you don't need one. Let's compare.
